Please tell the publisher Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez are dead. I had people in my Latin American history class thinking they were still alive and kicking along with the Venezuelan economy.
I got an A in this class. I didn't read the whole textbook, but it has a lot of information.

Purchased this for my kid for a community college history class. Wikipedia does as good a job. This looks to be just a very brief "world book" type brief on each country.The Economist would be a much better source.
I received the books on time and they are wonderful to read for my classes.
This book has many flaws, but the most serious is that it downplays the role of the United States in Latin America's history--the darker history. For example, Goodwin begins the chapter on Brazil by praising its fourth dictator as someone all about “democracy." Other dubious statements concern the orchestrators of the coup and their motivations, the nature of Brazil's landless peasants, and the debatable successes of the now debunked "economic miracle" and disastrous post-dictatorship privatizations. Glaring omissions include torture and murder by the military regime, state terror as the cause of the guerilla movement, the plight of marginalized peoples under the regime, the impunity given to the regime's torturers and murderers, and the role of the United States in Brazil’s struggles with underdevelopment and the destruction of the Amazon. Most devastatingly, the author omits the substantial role of the U.S. in the 1964 coup and dictatorship. This book appears to have been written by someone wishing to obscure, rather than reveal, the truth of Latin American history. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend it. A better strategy would be to teach with actual primary sources that include wide perspectives on these tragedies, including the perspective of the many victims.
